Dental floss – Good for oral health and the heart.

Thorough oral hygiene is not only important for bright, clean teeth, but also plays a crucial role in the health of the heart and blood vessels. New scientific research shows that regular use of dental floss can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

How does oral health affect the heart?

The oral cavity is a major entry point for bacteria that can enter the body. If the gums are inflamed, these germs multiply and can travel through the bloodstream. Chronic inflammation in the body, which results from such bacterial loads, is suspected of increasing blood pressure and damaging blood vessels.

Another risk arises from deposits in the vessels, so-called plaques, which consist of blood fats and calcium, among other things. If these plaques rupture, dangerous blockages can occur, which can trigger heart attacks or strokes. Scientific evidence suggests that consistent dental care contributes to the reduction of such risk factors.

Scientific findings on dental care and heart health

In a comprehensive study, data from thousands of people were evaluated. The results show that people with good oral hygiene, especially through regular cleaning of the spaces between teeth with dental floss, have a significantly lower risk of atrial fibrillation and stroke. The positive influence is also reflected in the lowering of blood pressure, which in turn reduces the risk of heart disease.
Another interesting result: patients who have to undergo heart surgery are increasingly urged to have their dental health checked beforehand. Specialists therefore recommend consistent oral hygiene as a supporting measure for general health.

Practical tips for good oral hygiene

Those who want to additionally protect their heart and vessels should, in addition to a healthy lifestyle, also ensure optimal dental care:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Daily cleaning of the spaces between the teeth with dental floss or interdental brushes
  • Regular professional dental cleanings at the dental hygienist
  • Watch for early signs of gum inflammation and seek early treatment

Conclusion: Good oral hygiene not only has aesthetic advantages but can also contribute to the prevention of serious illnesses. Anyone who uses dental floss regularly is doing not only their smile, but also their heart, a big favor.
